A member asked:

Did any lobotomy patients actually benefit from this? or were they all failures that left people mentally incapacitated?

Lobotomies were: a form of surgery to control mental symptoms. They left the patient w/flat affect and less functional in terms of intellect and motivation. W/the advent of psychiatric medications the number lobotomies dropped markedly from the 1950s onward and are not done today. Other forms of brain surgery are performed but for medical reasons such as intractable seizures but this is not the same as lobotomy.
