Aging, cholesterol: "hardening of the arteries" is a term referring to usually elderly people who have had cholesterol plaque build up, lining the arteries over many years. The plaque becomes hardened over time due to calcium deposits in the plaque. The effect of all this is that the arteries become stiffer. This also usually leads to higher blood pressure since the heart has to pump harder to get blood flowing.
