A member asked:

Small to medium length cut;medium deep wound. cut by a fairly new stainless steel; happened 5 days ago. rt now pain at wound; do i need tetanus shot?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Any wound at risk: The development of tetanus requires a breach in the integraty of the skin(a cut) and contamination of that cut by tetanus spores. A clean blade or object, cutting contaminated skin, or a clean wound touched by contaminated fingers, sets the stage for spores to germinate in the wound and produce tetanus. The rust is itself not important to tetanus. It is a simple marker of exposure to the elements.
