Is it dangerous to combine amitriptyline and 5htp?

Not recommended: Amitryptyline + 5HTP , commonly sold OTC as the supplement Tryptophan, may increase risk for serotonin syndrome or too much serotonin in your system. That said, check with prescribing doctor before taking 5HTP. See: http://www.drugs.com/interactions-check.php?drug_list=168-0,2568-0 I hope this helps. Best wishes.

Yes: 5 HTP is a naturally occurring amino acid that can be converted to serotonin in the body, and amitriptyline is a drug that boosts serotonin in the body. Using the two together could easily lead to levels of serotonin that are too high - leading to high blood pressure, fever, confusion, difficulty sleeping, dizziness, and a range of other side effects that are unpleasant and unsafe.
