Both: Either type of exercise will burn calories and help you lose weight if you have excess fat. However, if you build muscle, keep in mind that muscle weighs even more than fat. So, if your goal is to lose weight, you may want to do more cardio than weightlifting. For the long term, doing a combination of both types is the best way to go.
