Venous insufficiency: Venous insufficiency is a result of malfunctioning valves of the venous sustem. The most common area for this to happen is the venous system of the legs including the deep, superficial or perforating levels. Venous insufficiency can occur in other areas, for example, in the pelvis leading to pelvic congestion syndrome. It would be unlikely that generalized edema is due to venous insufficiency.
