Shingles? : Sounds like shingles - a herpes zoster virus inflammation. A resurgence from an old chickenpox infection. It's possible to have the pain symptoms without the skin rash. Do see a clinician to see if this shingles assessment is correct & to start treatment. Hope that helps.
