Swelling: Edema simply refers to a swelling in an area and is usually related to some form of fluid retention in the soft tissues. It can be post traumatic, it could be related to a systemic condition, such as heart failure, it can be related to a block in normal fluid drainage from an area such as in a blood clot. The presence or absence of pain is related to the severity and cause of it.
