It can: Often, decay occurs between the teeth at the gumline and the void allows food particle to become trapped and the area will swell and infection ensues. If decay is deep enough, the tooth could abcess and the bone and gum becomes infected. Something as simple as a popcorn skin can wedge between your tooth and gum and irritate and infect. Poor hygiene can cause infected gums and loose teeth .
