It can: Often, decay occurs between the teeth at the gumline and the void allows food particle to become trapped and the area will swell and infection ensues. If decay is deep enough, the tooth could abcess and the bone and gum becomes infected. Something as simple as a popcorn skin can wedge between your tooth and gum and irritate and infect. Poor hygiene can cause infected gums and loose teeth .

Of course: tooth decay, plaque, and bacteria contribute to the creation of cavities and gum disease.

It's a process...: Bacteria "touching" your gingival tissue won't necessarily cause an infection. A deep periodontal pocket with associated trapped debris and calculus can result in a gingival abscess. A cavity at or below the gum line can also result in an infection.

Not exactly: Different bacteria requiring different ph levels. But all infections require immediate treatment, unless you would like infections to worsen and spread. What should you do? Call your Dentist immediately.
