Misunderstanding: There is no such thing as "spontaneous" chlamydial infection, whether from the GI tract or anywhere else. You can catch chlamydia only by sex with an infected partner. New research indicates the possibility of chlamydia persisting in the GI tract and maybe resistant to azithromycin. Even this probably is rare, and such persistence probably is cleared by tetracycline antibiotics like doxycycline.
