Big question: The problem is that sleep medications work differently so it is hard to give you the side effects. Typically there are medications used for sleep that are not actually sleep medications but a side effect of the medication is sleepiness (antihistamines and antidepressants) or medications that work on brain (antiseizure, narcotics, sedatives)... Again lots of side effects but all different.

Sleeping pills: Depends on the type of sleeping pills & how long it lasts for. Short acting ones can cause dependency and dizziness. Long-acting ones can cause the same, plus daytime drowsiness, memory problems, confusion, fatigue, headaches, nervousness, GI upset, amnesia, cognitive disturbances.
