Yes, you can.: Hard coughing causes your intercostal (rib) muscles to contract forcefully. This can cause muscle strains and has even been known to cause hairline rib fractures, both of which can be quite painful. Usually there is nothing to do except take NSAIDs, rest, and try to relieve your cough. Your primary MD may be able to Rx antitussive meds to calm the cough or order a chest xray.
