Sometimes: There are different degrees of infection. If the wound shows a little redness at the periphery you should be able to treat it with a topical antibiotic. However, with more redness, swelling, pain or warmth you should see a doctor. Streaking of the redness away from the wound would be a sign of a more significant infection that would also need medical attention.
