Emergency Room trip?: Having new sharp chest pains is a serious enough for an evaluation right away. A doctor can check to see if there is a pneumothorax or other chest problem. Inflammation of the linings of the ribs, the lungs, or the heart can also cause chest pain. Evaluation may be done at an ER, where it is easy to get an exam, a chest x-ray, and an EKG plus lab tests if it looks like it could be a heart attack.
