Long answer: This is a difficult query for a 400 character response. Here's a link with accurate information: http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/schizophrenia/index.shtml Two key features are delusions and/or hallucinations. A delusion is a belief that is clearly untrue but also not commonly held in one's culture. A hallucination is a state of seeing or hearing something that is not actually present.

It depends on the: age. In adults, usually patients begin to exhibit negative symptoms first, such as withdrawal and loss of interest in activities, a lack of insight, although this is not the case for everyone. If someone is exhibiting strange behavior, or has had a change in conduct, an evaluation by a psychiatrist is warranted, regardless of the circumstances; illness ruled in or out and treatment initiated.
