Narcotics: If your dentist feels that it is necessary they might prescribe short term narcotic pain medication.

Antibiotics: for a painful abscess, if it in the patients best interest to not pull the tooth or start the root canal right there and then, I will Rx antibiotics, ibuprofen and other pain meds based on medical conditions and allergies. I'd ask for an antibiotic, but they may wish to see you again.

See a DDS ASAP: Taking pain medications, using ice packs or other home remedies may only offer temporary relief. Contact your dentist for abscess treatment.
