A member asked:

Why is alcohol withdrawal even worse than withdrawal from hard drugs like heroin?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Alcohol and withdrw: from benzodiazepines can be fatal. Withdrawal from opiates is difficult, may require treatment and maintenance for relapse prevention, but fatalities do not occur as commonly from the withdrawal itself. Nowadays, the rate of death from alcohol withdrawal has declined due to our understanding of it as a disease, and with more rapid treatment of alcohol use disorders.
