Good question!: Epileptic seizures are caused by abnormalities in the brain that trigger abnormal signals causing the seizure activity. Withdrawal from heavy alcohol use causes sudden sympathetic output (fight or flight adrenaline response) which affects the cardiovascular system as well as cause hallucinations and seizures. The death risk is from cardiovascular collapse, not the actual seizure.

Epileptics do: die from seizures, just not as frequently. There are different neurologic events with alcohol withdrawal seizures that don’t occur with grand mal seizures. Also, the cardiovascular and other organ damage from alcohol use can be a factor in mortality in alcohol w/d seizures. There is probably more than one reason for this phenomenon, and taken on a case by case basis. Good question.
