Infection /trauma?: Swelling and redness imply inflammation of your toes. I hope they are not infected(it will show as a break in the skin(Ulcer) or discharge of pus. i would advice that you either see your family doctor or a podiatrist to help you assess, treat and advice about proper care of your feet(properly fitting shoes. Try getting some attention within 1 or 2 days as the infection can flare up/spread. Good lu

Foot or Shoe.: Shoes, for a host of reasons, can cause many problems in the foot. Compensation, whether in the foot or elsewhere in something to discourage, due to it's deleterious effects on normal function. Having said that, I would be more inclined to consider the fit of the shoes, in terms of length and width, rather than the supportive function. Without knowing your foot's bio-mechanics, it is hard to say.
