Separate at night: A toddler can be (should be) in another room sleeping safely if there is another room. His room should be fully childproof. If there is no other room, then a big playpen will do. Extinguishing bad habits often requires a combination of praising good behaviors (nice words + hugs), while using Time-Out for bad behaviors. One and a half minutes of Time-Out is fine for a one and a half year-old.
