Primary care, then..: Other doctors such as a rheumatologist and endocrinologist can help look for medical causes of tongue enlargement. If surgery is needed, the ENT (Head and Neck) surgeons are the ones who treat macroglossia. Reasons for surgery include airway obstruction, speech difficulties, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), and cosmetics. The procedure is usually called partial glossectomy.
