Temporary mark: It will not cause cancer but can remain for a week or more.This is not a mark of "passion" or "love", it is a way to brand or mark territory,like a wolf peeing at its boundaries. Hickies, unless accidental are childish. Think about it.

A bruise: A hickey is a bruise. Biting or sucking the skin breaks tiny blood vessels and makes them bleed which causes a bruise. It won't cause cancer but it will take at least a week, if not longer, to heal up and disappear. And don't believe anyone who tells you toothpaste will make it heal faster!
