Inflammation: A viral infection triggers a complex immunologic reaction which increases blood flow thru the nose so that the tissues swell causing blockage, other inflammatory mediators stimulate mucus production and fever, the scratchy throat is from inflammation of the throat tissues directly or indirectly by post nasal drip, cough is from drainage or lung irritation, hoarseness is from vocal cord swelling.
