A member asked:

Why does ulcerative colitis cause bloating?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Bloating: Ulcerative colitis, when in an active inflammatory state usually causes diarrhea often with the passage of bloody stools. Bloating will occur if the colon motility slows down with resulting slowing of propulsion of feces and intestinal gas. There is a complication called toxic megacolon where the colon actually becomes paralyzed and develops life threatening distension and is a medical emergency.
