A member asked:

What can the support groups do for cancer, how do they help?

Information: I help with our brain tumor support group. This offers patients a venue to meet other patients and their families. They can discuss their experiences and offer advice to one another. Usuially, one of the physicians serves as a resource to answer questions. Or a specific topic is addressed (ie. What are clinical trials?). Also, local resources/events (ie. Fundraiser walks) are pointed out.

Others who understan: A cancer diagnosis typically triggers strong emotional reactions. Individuals react differently, but sadness, fear, disbelief, anger, and a sense of loss are all common. Even the most well intended family members and friends cannot understand the impact of the diagnosis, and this can lead to isolation and loneliness. Support groups can be very powerful in this regard. Best wishes
