A member asked:

Can you please tell me how hepatitis c and hepatitis b differ?

Dr. Robert Rahimi answered

Specializes in Hepatology

RNA vs DNA virus: Hepatitis c is an RNA virus and hepatitis b is a dna virus. Both can lead to chronic liver disease and cirrhosis. Those with hepatitis b do not need to develop cirrhosis to be at risk or develop liver cancer. The treatment is different for both and hepatitis c can be cured, while hepatitis b can be suppressed with medications but not cured.
