Endometriosis: can only be diagnosed with surgery: if you have not already had a surgery, you have been given a "tentative" or "possible" diagnosis. I often recommend surgery simply to MAKE a diagnosis, though it's acceptable to do a trial of suppression first. Discuss with your doctor or a virtual consult online if you have questions. Good wishes.

See below: For mild to moderate pelvic pain medical management is desirable. For more advanced disease or severe symptoms not responding to hormonal therapy surgery may be required. Women with endometriosis can conceive normally but if there is infertility surgery and assisted reproduction techniques may be needed. Despite extensive research, the optimal management of endometriosis is unclear.

Surgery: Surgery by a endometriosis specialist is really the way to go, and in most cases leads to vastly improved symptoms over time. It is also the only way to really know if you have endometriosis. Medical management can temporize symptoms but does nothing to truly treat the disease, which is the presence of endometrial tissue outside of the uterine cavity.

Treatment options: Ideally, diagnosis of endometriosis should be established by obtaining a piece of tissue. This requires a surgical procedure in the OR under anesthesia. At that time, endometriosis can be removed. Hormone therapy is very effective, i.e., if symptoms disappear, likelihood is that they came from endometriosis; it can only be given for a year. Birth control pills are also very effective.
