my gi wants me to take miralax (polyethylene glycol) indefinitely for constipation. is this safe?

Yes: if it works to reduce your constipation, and it is the best solution you can come up with, it should not be a problem to use it long-term. Just be sure to keep in touch with your doctor if you have any side effects of any sort. Most people don't. Good luck.
