I heard barium swallows can be dangerous and cause shock to the body among other things. anyone ever have this test done?

Simple safe test: The main discomfort form a barium swallow is having to drink the contrast (barium sulfate) for visualization of structures. The modified barium swallow is used to evaluate swallowing. The main side effect you can get is constipation. The only people at risk for problems are those that have a severe swallowing problem if a significant amount of barium goes to the lungs.
