See your Family Doc: Medical term for sore throat is pharyngitis. Most cases of pharyngitis are caused by viruses which will not respond to antibiotics. Only Strep throat, a bacterial form of pharyngitis, needs antibiotics. One way to determine which is which is via Centor criteria. Check out http://www.mdcalc.com/modified-centor-score-for-strep-pharyngitis/. In meantime, acetaminophen & NSAIDs can help temporarily.
