Specializes in Clinical Psychology

Mental health: pros are found in a variety of disciplines. Clinical psychologists are trained to diagnose and treat mental illness, and do research and psych testing. Psychiatrists are medical docs who specialize in medication for psych problems. Counselors have a master's degree as entry credential and work w/developmental issues, couples, etc. Some social workers are trained in therapy also. Peace&health.

Therapy vs meds: Speaking very generally, most psychologists hold either a PhD or a PsyD degree (I hold both) and practice psychotherapy. Psychiatrists hold either an MD or a DO degree, and they prescribe psychotropic medications, and generally do not do all that much therapy these days, but years ago psychiatrists would do both. If symptoms are severe, see the psychiatrist first.

This is a question: I hear a lot. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MD) & they primarily help patients through prescribing medication. Psychiatric nurse practitioners also prescribe psychotropic medication. A psychologist has a doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) & they primarily help patients through talk therapy & testing. Counselors & marriage & family therapists also provide talk therapy.
