That's about right: Epiretinal Membrane peeling has variable visual outcomes which primarily relates to the tenacity of the membrane's attachment & the affect the membrane has on the delicate retinal architecture. Peeling may also result in loss of ganglion cell neurons which may result in a visual field defect. The distortion in vision may take up to a year to resolve, and some may not entirely.

Optimistic: it all depends on the starting vision before pucker surgery. I generally quote patients a 2 out of 3 chance of improving 2 or more lines on the eye chart, and a 1 in 3 chance of minimal improvement, though stabilization (no more worsening). Of course there are rare cases of poorer vision following surgery as well. Regarding distortion, it is almost always improved, but rarely completely gone.
