Not brain damage: Congratulations for quitting. Without knowing where the crackling sound is coming from I wonder if you may have fluid/air in the sinuses and/or middle ear. It sounds like the infection has not yet cleared. Please contact your doctor with your symptoms. If you have fever then go right away.
