Direct cause: Straining to have a hard bowel movement irritates hemorrhoid veins causing vein swelling, discomfort and sometimes bleeding. Do not sit for long times at the toilet, drink plenty of liquids, eat high fiber foods fruits and vegetables, use fiber supplements like metamucil, use laxative if needed.
