One of the: "rules" we learn early on in Medical School is that when patient's say "I have a pain in my heart" it is almost NEVER HEART DISEASE! That's because true heart pain is generally chest pain PLUS ......a number of other symptoms which make it pretty unmistakable. What you describe sounds more like ANXIETY/HYPERVENTILATION ...a visit to the Primary Care Doc is indicated! Hope this helps! Dr Z

Chest discomfort: I disagree with other respondents to this question. Chest discomfort must be taken seriously, because while there are many causes of chest pains which are not dangerous, there are other causes which are life threatening, even in young people. Chest pains which concern your friend should be evaluated urgently by a physician.
