Axis deviation: EKGs show cardiac rate, rhythm, and axis. Axis deviation is determined by whether the QRS complex is positive or negative in leads I and AVF. If the axis is positive in both leads I and AVF, called "both thumbs up" the axis is normal. Axis interpretation can generally be described as trying to determine where the heart has an electric conduction defect, fascicular blocks, and axis deviation.
