Variants: Interesting question and always part of our thinking algorithms. There are 2 possibilities as you indeed pointed to 1. First is that you both developed same viral illness and eventually your dad developed a sore throat as a variant of same illness, either because he suffered from reflux from before or because of different meds. Second would be that he is indeed developing complications/ illness.
