Yes: Each state has different laws. However, having a mental illness does not preclude someone from purchasing a gun. In many states, if someone has been committed or certified as an involuntary patient then they are unable to buy a gun. Many people are voluntarily admitted to psychiatric units and are still able to purchase guns.
