A member asked:

How long is it supposed to it take for lifestyle to cause pre diabetes, then type ii diabetes?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No definite time: Prediabetes is a descriptive term, which has a variable time of onset. Generally, it takes 5-15 years to go from obesity and Insulin resistance to overt diabetes -- but that varies greatly depending upon age, race and genetic predisposition. Don't wait too long before beginning a program of diet, exercise and weight loss -- and possibly medication. It doesn't happen suddenly, but long term.
