I'm afraid to take antidepressants but i get nervous a lot. why can't i take xanax (alprazolam) as needed wouldn't that be safer than an every day drug?

Not necessarily: If your anxiety is caused by a disorder that is controlled by an SSRI for example it would be better to use one of these as there is no tolerance or dependency & maybe more effective. You need to diagnose the source of your anxiety.
