A member asked:

Hi. i'm doing a school project on a salivary implant and i was wondering if it would get infected after you stitch up the surgical skin flap.

Infection risk: There is a small risk of infection after the implant is placed. You likely will be placed on some antimicrobial medication in the meanwhile, but your doctor should be well aware of this.

Surgery in the mouth: With any surgery, there is a risk of complications including infection. The mouth, as you're probably aware, is not a sterile environment and depending on various factors the chance for a post-op infection could increase. Surgeries which involve a 'foreign device' are at greater risk of infection than other types of surgery because something is 'left behind' which could serve as a focus for germs.
