No vinegar!: This will only worsen the problem. Use an antacid, and if you can find one such as Gaviscon which has an ingredient that helps the antacid to stay at the top of the liquid so as to protect the uppermost part of your esophagus. Sleep on several pillows always, and avoid eating or drinking ANYTHING acidic, spicy, hot, or alcoholic. If persistent, see your gastroenterologist. Good luck!

Multiple ways : Stomach juice in the throat can lead to irritation and inflammation. This in turn can cause a variety of symptoms from excessive mucous (the feeling of post nasal drip) to hoarseness, throat clearing, feeling of a lump in the throat, swallowing difficulty, pain and even in rare cases - cancer. It is important to be treated. Throat reflux is harder to treat than heartburn requiring changes in diet.

First relax: This is very uncomfortable. In my office i make GI cocktails that include xylocaine (lidocaine) viscous and mylanta. But if it is a recurrent problem i demand it be scoped.

Dr. Gerald Mandell answered

Possible: An estimated 20 - 60% of patients with gerd have symptoms in throat (hoarseness, sore throat) without any significant heartburn. A failure to diagnose and treat gerd may lead to persistent throat conditions, such as chronic laryngitis, hoarseness, difficulty speaking, sore throat, dry cough, constant throat clearing, and granulomas (soft, pink bumps) on the vocal cords.

When I lie down, I sometimes get a prickly feeling in my throat, maybe from postnasal drip or reflux (no known reflux though). Do I need to see a doc?

Only symptom?: Only symptoms prickly feeling?
Depends on associated symptoms or duration and if getting worse.
If you are concerned, an evaluation by an ENT doc a good idea.

Just a thought: POST NASAL DRIP (from allergies) can produce these symptoms.....get it checked out but in the meantime a trial of an over the counter ANTIHISTAMINE might be helpful!
