Contractions: Before true labor begins you may have false labor pains known as Braxton Hicks contractions which are irregular. The signs of true labor are regular contractions, a need to urinate more frequently due to your baby settling or lowering into the pelvis, passing a mucus plug, pain in your back and lower abdomen which is unrelieved by position, and braking of your water.

It happens: Your system will sometimes do this, and consider them trial runs of the uterine muscle. At 28 weeks it is important that you work out a plan with your ob about what you should do in case this becomes more of a problem. Sometimes this can progress to premature labor & the doc's can stop it if they intervene in time. You just need them to tell you when to call/go to the hospital if it happens.
