Sounds miserable: There are many causes of cough, but the most common is a viral respiratory infection. It can take about a week for a viral cough to even begin to improve, and it's not unusual for the cough to take 3, up to 6 weeks to completely resolve especially in people with underlying lung problems such as smokers and asthmatics. Seek care if it's hard to breath, worsens or fails to begin improving.

Sinus or lung: Productive cough for over a week should be evaluated by a doctor. This symptom may be a sign of a sinus infection, pneumonia, bronchitis, etc. Dizziness after coughing is using "lightheadedness" from hyperventilating during the coughing episodes.
