It is your uvula: It is virtually impossible to see your own epiglottis. It is most likely you are seeing your uvula which hangs down from the soft palate. Uvulitis (swelling of the uvula) is most commonly from an infection. Group A Streptococcus is the most common but there are others as well as viral infections. It can cause difficulty swallowing and breathing. I would strongly encourage you to see your doctor.
