Thick mucous: Mucous is thicker and darker in the morning because there is less water content in the mucous. Overnight, you simply don't drink the amount of fluid that you would during the day. Hence, mucous tends to be drier and therefore darker and thicker. A good way to combat thick mucous is to use a "mucolytic." This is a medicine like Guaifenesin. It's the drug in Robitussin (guaifenesin). Also drink more water
