See answer: The most common cause of a swelling in the side of the neck is an enlarged lymph node, due to a recent infection in the the throat or else where, In this case it is often tender. Other causes of a neck mass or enlarged lymph nodes are possible.** If the swelling persists or increases you must see a physician for an exam.
