A member asked:

My 5yo picks her fingers, they are red and swollen. i tell her she will get infections. why does she do this and how can i help?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Fingers : Repetitive behaviors are common in many children (suckling thumb, twirling hair, biting nails). Sometimes they get comfort from the behavior. Gentle reminders are best. The remedies you've certainly read or heard about are usually futile. The biggest risks are infection. Positive rewards can be helpful (i.e. professional polish, etc).
