Not very well: It's possible to get clues for and against pneumonia with a stethoscope, and some doctors who are true experts with the stethoscope and physical exam of the chest are more likely to tell accurately. But almost always a chest xray or other imaging (e.g. CT scan) is the only way to know for sure.
