A member asked:

I think i need a endoscopy for gerd what ways do they sedate you and how long does it take for the sedation to work?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

MAC for anesthesia : Assuming you are otherwise healthy, nost likely a single IV drug called propofol will be used under the care of trained anesthesia personnell. This is called MAC or Monitored Anesthesia Care where you are deeply sedated yet breathing on your own to allow the endoscope to pass into your esophagus and stomach. Recovery is usually less then 15min to wake up and dicharged in an hour to home.
